New year, new beginnings… time to start on that New Year’s resolution. Admittedly after a very busy and indulgent Christmas, and a little too much time spent in the giant freezer that is winter, we are having a slow start into 2015. Lazy, carefree mornings go hand in hand with casual breakfasts, and we know just the spot.
Amongst the hanging baubles, jars of Italian almond cookies and swaths of mistletoe, tightly packed bench tables await you at Cafecafe, Cologne. This small café has a big following of laid back locals at its two branches in central Cologne and Ehrenfeld, who are all here for the relaxed and reliably good breakfast.
A highlight of Cafecafe is the fresh juice and smoothie menu, full of lean green juices perfect for those keen to get their health and fitness on track in 2015. Here the #8 with pineapple, mango, apple and fresh mint (€4.40) is the star of the breakfast show, with the moccaccino and cappuccino taking on sideline roles.
Scrambled eggs (€4.20) are a made in the classical German style, cucumber slices included. Finished with cracked pepper and stacked on thick slices of Italian country style bread, they are a hearty start to your winter morning.
Creamy low fat yoghurt is served with either fresh fruit, natural fruit muesli, or the crunchy muesli shown above (€3.20). The crispy oats and rice pops are a classic store-bought blend, and should really come with a set of pyjamas so that you can fully enjoy the comforts of home while catching up with friends.
The homemade banana bread (€2.60) is dense and sweet, balanced with more natural yoghurt blanketed in cinnamon. This intensely fragrant spice is another potent superfood, along with the blueberries and also acai, an Amazonian berry high in antioxidants that Cafecafe interestingly serves as a sorbet with muesli.
Cafecafe’s well stocked cake cabinet marks the end of all that healthy eating. Lemon tart, devil’s food cake, New York and mohn cheesecakes, a beesting cake, carrot cake and several luscious chocolate creations mean that you won’t get out the door so quickly, or easily!
Too late for brunch? Lunch at Cafecafe means an assortment of filled bagels, either Italian style with pesto, rocket, tomato and prosciutto options, or more authentic American style with fresh cheese.
The low-effort yet healthy New Year solution.
